The colour purple has long been associated with rarity, royalty, luxury, ambition and magic.  A Purple Patch is used to describe "a period of good luck or success" and Formula 1 fans will know a Purple Sector signifies that a driver has "set the fastest time through that segment of the lap". 

As a colour synonymous with driving for success it sums up the goal of these ramblings.
